EMDR - The Start of My Two Fingers To Anxiety
If you want more explanation on EMDR there are details on my website or call me, this blog is more my story so you really can see its power in action.
Where my EMDR journey started
After months of talking therapies aimed at curing anxiety (and my CFS/ Fibromyalgia), I was still stuck and in hole which I occasionally peeped out of and then sank back down into. By chance I was listening to the local radio station (BBC Radio Northampton) and a chap was talking about EMDR treatment, which is recommended for Trauma, PTSD and Anxiety. The voice in amongst the noise around me spoke loudly and clearly! I had heard this for a reason and I had to ask; was there another way? Was there hope out there for me? Remove section
I had certainly heard this interview for a reason and as a wise man once told me, action conquers fear (also known as anxiety). So I got in touch with the guy on the radio and booked an appointment. This was the first step in my EMDR journey.
I always suspected that some traumatic things that had happened to me were at the root of my crash and state of constant fear. After a comprehensive telephone explanation, I was booked in for a 2hr first appointment and I really felt full of hope!
If you understand what causes anxiety, then knowing why you are feeling this way really helps.
Anxiety (fear) is a mechanism that we all need to keep us safe (stop us walking off a cliff edge, for example) and should kick in when we really need it. As we walk towards the edge we get a feeling that says don’t go any further, so we stop, that’s it job done - thank you very much anxiety, you can go back in your box now!
So if you're familiar with anxiety, you will know that we go into fight or flight mode, it’s the feeling that gives us the warning sign. Therefore it’s the feeling that’s the problem, right? This for me was the game changing start of the way I saw things, it wasn’t my thoughts/traumas and old events that were the problem, it was the FEELING (emotion) that was attached to them.
This is when EMDR changed my game in overcoming anxiety
Consider this if someone told you that they could make those old feelings go away, the ones that are attached to those old stories/traumas/fears without you even talking about them. You may look at them with a hint of disbelief, but believe me it can, it does and it changes the game.
If you don’t feel the associated fear anymore linked to those old events…the problem is gone. So this blog journals the ‘ticking bombs of anxiety triggers’ that were running in the background and flooding my body with fear and stress chemicals which eventually physically damaged me.
In my next blog I will reveal just what those bombs were, how they were fixed and just how I felt.
